This region is totally different from the rest of the country in terms of religion, language, culture etc. What about the Maledives? They are a Republic and not part of another country, also they have their own passport. I agree about including Montserrat!
Hello interesting article. No one in Madeira or the Azores or the Canary Islands for that matter consider them independent countries. They are autonomous regions but very much part of Portugal and Spain. You must be good at photoshop. I know this is old but… I really want to comment on this. Although they have a lot of unique cultural aspects, they still pretty much adopt all continental Portugal traditions and lifestyle.

I had the chance to visit more than countries so far. I would truly count several places I have been to as separate countries and not as part of a bigger one. We have thousands of miles between these places, totally different cultures, traditions, way of life, therefore to name them as their once colonizers wouldnt be fair. Just my opinion. Your comments are wrong. Scotland and Wales do have separate laws. Do have different languages. Its not pedantic. Its fact. They are separate countries. Also, to say they have different languages is pedantic. Let me answer that for you. I recently decided that I want to visit every country as well. I had to write a list of all the countries and came up with the number as well. The Isle of Man is much more of an independent country than Scotland or Wales.
