Link eventually enters a room with Ganondorf and Zelda, where he engages in a battle against Ganondorf. After their first battle, Link frees Zelda from her crystal.

Ganondorf destroys the Castle in an attempt to kill both Link and Zelda, who manage to quickly escape from it. Ganondorf emerges from the castle's rubble, and with the Triforce of Power, he transforms into a beast named Ganon.

Just before the second battle, Ganon knocks the Master Sword out of Link's hands, and encloses both of them within a forcefield, preventing Link from retrieving the Master Sword. However, with Zelda's help, Link manages to retrieve Master Sword, which he ultimately uses to destroy Ganon. With their restored powers, the seven Sages banish Ganondorf into the Dark Realm.

Since Ganondorf still has the Triforce of Power, Ganondorf vows to get revenge on their descendants. Zelda instructs Link to return the Master Sword in its pedestal, closing the path between the two timelines. She then plays the Song of Time and returns Link back into his childhood. Link still retains the knowledge of the entire incident, and revisits Princess Zelda in the Castle Courtyard, informing her of the whole incident to prevent it from happening again.

Like The Legend of Zelda , the game introduced a few mechanics that were reused in subsequent games of its type; in Ocarina of Time' s case, it is context-sensitive actions and targeting.

With context-sensitive actions, this allows for numerous actions to be assigned to one button, which varies based on Link's location and action in the game. For example, if Link draws out his sword , the HUD display instructs the player to holster it by pressing A. Another example is if Link is standing at a door, causing the HUD's A button to read "Open", which directly instructs the player to press the button to open the door.

Targeting causes the camera to directly focus on an object or enemy. During this mode, when the player presses a button, Link automatically performs the corresponding action such as striking his sword on the target without the player having to move the Control Stick. The player controls Link as an adult or a child in different parts of his adventure. From the Door of Time , when Link pulls the Master Sword , he travels seven years in the future and becomes an adult.

Link has different abilities as both a child and an adult, both of which are key to solving puzzles. For example, Link can only use the Fairy Bow as an adult, while only young Link can crawl through small passages. Like previous The Legend of Zelda installments, Link's main weapon is a sword and shield. As a child, Link can obtain more basic weapons, such as Bombs and Deku Seeds , within the dungeons or from different locations.

As an adult, Link can still obtain most of the basic weapons which does not include Deku Seeds. As an adult, Link can obtain two additional tunics and boots, aside from the default Kokiri Tunic and Kokiri Boots ; the player can switch Link's tunic and boots from the Equipment subscreen of the Inventory.

The tunics include the Goron Tunic and Zora Tunic , which respectively allow Link to withstand hot, volcanic climate and to breathe underwater, and the boots include the Iron Boots and Hover Boots which respectively allow him to sink to the bottom of water and to temporarily hover in midair. There are side quests during Link's adventure, and they are optional but often involve a reward at the end, such as the Biggoron's Sword or the ability to ride Epona , allowing Link to navigate around Hyrule Field faster.

Throughout the game, Link learns twelve melodies that allow him to solve music-based puzzles and to teleport back to specific location that he has already visited. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the first game of the series with a variety of different races. There are six different races, each located in a different area of the game. During Link's adventure, he encounters some supporting characters who directly assist him during his adventure.

Each Sage is from one of the six races. Nabooru Gerudo. Princess Ruto Zora. Saria Kokiri. It has been requested that this section be rewritten.

Reason: has conjectural, unsourced names; also needs reorganization, as some characters appear in the main quest while others only appear in sidequests. These are other, miscellaneous characters encountered by Link during his adventure. They act neither directly antagonistic nor supportive towards Link. The items and weapons that Link uses often depends on whether he is a child or an adult. The player can assign items to either , , and from the Select Item Subscreen.

There are some items that Link obtains more than once during his adventure, many of which reappear from previous The Legend of Zelda installments. All of these items are accessible to Link as either a child or an adult except the Magic Beans, which he can only obtain as a child. There are a few items that reappear only in dungeons.

While child Link can obtain Small Keys during the Treasure Chest Shop minigame, the keys start appearing in dungeons when Link is an adult.

There are some items that Link cannot obtain unless he has a bottle to store it in. Every bottled item is usable in both timelines. Link can acquire three new abilities from a spell, each provided by one of the Great Fairies. Every spell is named after one of the three goddesses. The equipment is organized horizontally on a separate menu, the Equipment Subscreen.

If Link has more than one type of sword, shield, tunic, or boots, the player can switch between them. There is some equipment that Link can upgrade later on in his adventure. Each type is displayed from the leftmost side of the Inventory.

Link starts out with a Wallet that holds up to 99 Rupees. There are two Wallet upgrades that he can acquire during his adventure, and these can hold a higher capacity of rupees.

Unlike the other equipment, the Wallets do not have icons that are displayed on inventory; their icon is only shown when Link in the dialogue box for when Link obtains the wallet. Both wallets can be used in either the child or the adult timeline. The obtained stones are displayed from the Inventory's "Quest Status" subscreen. As an adult, Link must obtain six Medallions , each corresponding to one of the Sages. They are a source of the Sages' power, which they use to help Link enter into Ganon's Castle.

Link's collected Medallions are displayed from the Inventory's "Quest Status" subscreen. There are seven masks that Link can wear as a child. They are optional and most do not have any purpose aside from others reacting differently when seeing Link.

Defeating a mid boss will usually reward the player with a new weapon, while defeating the main boss will complete the dungeon and reward you with a Heart Container. In the game's opening cutscene, Navi the fairy is seen soaring through Kokiri Forest until she arrives to her destination - Link 's house.

She was ordered by the Great Deku Tree to bring Link to him, though before doing so Link was required to come in possession of a sword and a shield, both of which can be found in the village. Once the summoned subject arrives, the Great Deku Tree explains how he was cursed by the Gerudo villain Ganondorf. Link tries to his heart's content to save the tree by entering his insides and dispatching the source of the curse bestowed upon him - Gohma , though the tree was inevitably going to perish because of it, and thus did so before telling Link his journey in which he would have to partake in order to save the world.

His parting words were to tell Link to head straight to Hyrule Castle , and before dying gives him a spiritual stone - one of three. After traveling through Hyrule Field and subsequently entering Hyrule Castle Town , he heads towards the castle and shirks the guards. Upon entering the castle, he meets Princess Zelda , who, like Link, is nothing but a child. She tells Link of her foretelling dream of an evil man upon a black clad horse - the one who cursed the Great Deku Tree to his death, and tells Link of the impending doom upon their land that she witnessed in her dream.

She trusts that none will believe her, and requests that Link does and find the remaining two stones that are in the possession of the Gorons and the Zora. Ganondorf attempted to claim the one the Great Deku Tree owned, and cursed him once the tree wouldn't give in. If Ganondorf did have all three of the stones, he would be given access to the Sacred Realm , and within it, the Triforce , a relic which would give him powers beyond comparison.

By finding the three stones before the evil king, Link would be able to acquire the Triforce before he could. First, Link heads towards Goron City , and latterly, Zora's Domain , in order to find the two remaining stones. In both of these locations, Link was required to right what was wronged by Ganondorf - in the Goron's case, it was to thwart the Dodongos within the Dodongo's Cavern and to clear the boulder that was blocking it in order for the Gorons could enter and reap its benefits, which consisted of the species' primary source of food.

For the Zora he was required to enter Jabu Jabu 's belly and save Princess Ruto , after which she'd give him the Zora's Sapphire, the last Spiritual Stone, as a token of her appreciation. Upon returning to Hyrule Castle to inform Zelda of his success with finding the stones, Link witnessed in horror as Princess Zelda with Impa fled Hyrule Castle after Ganondorf attacked it. Ganondorf's goal was to come in possession of the Ocarina of Time , of which he would also need in order to enter the Sacred Realm.

After passing by Link, Zelda heaved the Ocarina into the moat by the castle without Ganondorf noticing. Link stayed his guard in order to try to prevent Ganondorf from going any further, though the dark lord used his magic to cast him aside and rode on, without considering the potential menace the boy would become in the future.

Afterwards, Link entered the moat and recovered the ocarina. Directly after getting the ocarina, he headed straight towards the Temple of Time and subsequently entered the Sacred Realm using the three stones and the ocarina. He thrusts the Master Sword , the blade of evil's bane, from its pedestal. However, Link did not expect what occurred afterwards - the sword sealed Link away in the realm for seven years, until he was be old enough to wield the sword efficiently and defeat the enemy.

However, before it sealed him, Ganondorf was able to enter the realm and snatched the Triforce for himself. Link was powerless; he could do nothing but watch in horror. He would not know what would occur next until seven years have past. Link would learn after the seven years that the Triforce had separated into three parts when Ganondorf took it for himself. The Triforce represents courage, wisdom and power.

If the wielder is not balanced with all three, then it will separate, which happened with Ganondorf, who was filled with more power than courage or wisdom. After the three portions were split, only the Triforce of Power remained with him. The other two would later be revealed to have been within Link courage and Princess Zelda wisdom , respectively.

Ganondorf would need to have both of them together in order to wield its true power. Meanwhile, a prophecy foretold of six sages who dwelt within six separate temples that could be awakened to counter the one who had such power. Rauru , one of such sages, was within the Temple of Time. He instructed Link to search for the others, which he would do so successfully.

While searching out the sages, Link would often be greeted by a mysterious character known as Sheik , who would teach Link a variety of songs for his Ocarina.

After fulfilling his destiny, Link found that there was a seventh sage - Sheik. After conversing with the character, Sheik revealed her true form - Princess Zelda. She had disguised herself as a Sheikah in order not to be caught by Ganondorf, who was eagerly seeking her.

After revealing herself, Ganondorf quickly found her location and kidnapped her, bringing her into his castle which had replaced Hyrule Castle. Link sought after her, though found the castle hovering in mid air. The six sages bound their powers together and created a pathway, which gave Link access. Once inside, he was forced to destroy six barriers which incorporated the themes of previous dungeons in the game. After doing so using the newly acquired Light Arrow , Link took on Ganondorf himself.

After defeating him without the help of Navi, who was powerless thanks to Ganondorf's evil forces, he rescued Zelda and they made their way outside the crumbling tower. Once outside, Ganondorf transformed into a terrifying beast known as Ganon, a ruthless boar-like creature.

Link was required to finish him off by attacking him with the Master Sword, and in the end thrusting his blade into the beast, thus ending his long adventure. The sages cast the beast into darkness, and although it would inevitably make its return to try and take claim of the Triforce once more, this was the end of this story.

Link was sent back to the past, and the citizens of Hyrule rejoiced as the sages excluding Rauru and Zelda, the latter of which was sent to rule over Hyrule looked over them on Death Mountain.

Link's journey had ended, and his descendants would once more wield the Master Sword to defeat evil as he had done.

The game takes place in Hyrule , the kingdom in which most of the games in the franchise take place. Many dungeons and cities surround Hyrule field, and the monarchical castle where the adjudicators live is found to the North. In all, there are eight prominent areas in Hyrule, which include the Death Mountain, primarily habituated by the Goron race, Gerudo Valley, home of the Gerudo , the capital Hyrule Castle , the overworld Hyrule Field, the small town known as Kakariko Village, the large lake known as Lake Hylia, the Lost Woods, which takes place in the beginning of the game, and Zora's River, where the multitude of Zoras live.
